Race For First Place Heats Up

- Although both teams have locked up the #1 and #2 spots in the league standings, the race to the finish still holds some excitement for the Philadelphia Fire Ants and Oslo Vikings.

The Ants, currently leading the league with 122 points, are looking to snag their first Commissioner’s Trophy since they won back-to-back in the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons. With only one game remaining however, they have diminishing control over their fate. Refusing to comment publicly about “the Race to First Place”, inside sources have indicated that controversial GM Norm Donovan has been obsessing over it for several weeks. A professional statistician was hired to explain the concept of the “magic number” and promptly fired when Donovan failed to grasp the concept.

The Vikings, who won the Commissioner’s Trophy last season, sit three points back but have four games remaining to make up the difference. With the Ants recent loss to the Supersonics, the Vikings have gained valuable ground. To their credit, the Vikings seem more focused on playoff success and recuperating from the long travel delays caused by the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland.

If the Ants win their final game against the Vancouver Island Norsemen, the Vikings will need to win three of their remaining 4 games to win the Commissioner’s Trophy. If the Ants lose their final game however, Oslo need only win two out of four to clinch first place. With both teams fairly close in wins, overtime losses may further complicate the tight race. Indeed, the trophy may not be determined until the very final game of the season – with Oslo facing off against the Spartans.
