It was suggested that we have a thread to collect thoughts on the Super Summit and Live Draft coming to Edmonton in August 2017. Nothing really specific to kick things off; just feel free to post your thoughts on the event here.

Yes, as long as you're coming to watch it!

What are some of the cool things to see in Edmonton besides the West Edm Mall?

That's a loaded question and depends on what you're most interested in. Edmonton is a festival city, and we host some pretty amazing events over the course of the summer: Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Heritage Days, Fringe Festival, Street Performers Festival, just to name a few. Unfortunately, not every one of those events takes place on the same weekend of the Summit.

The Edmonton Tourism website has a lot of great information to get you started, but if you want some more specific recommendations, please let me know where your interests lie and we can go from there.

Personally, I like to try local restaurants when I travel to new cities. Did you know that Edmonton was recently voted the 8th best place in the world for pizza? There are too many other great local restaurants to name here, but again, I can make personal recommendations once I know what you like.

If you're extending your trip on either side, and like the outdoors, there are bus shuttles that can take you to Jasper or Banff National Parks. Both are maybe 6 hours away via bus (less if you rent a car), but if you've never been, they are totally worth it. I've heard the Glacier Skywalk is amazing (hoping to do it this summer sometime).

The mall is the default "attraction" because it's enclosed and always there, but it's also true that there is a lot of stuff to see and do there, particularly for visitors without a lot of spare time.

But again, if you let me know how much time you've got and what you like to do (or ask more specific things in these threads) I'll be happy to respond.

I assume there's a statue of Ryan Smyth crying somewhere.

Just a friendly reminder that this has to occur as I am now a confirmed guest!

I spent five days visiting Edmonton in December of 2015. One thing that's really worth doing is just walking across the High Level bridge. The view of the North Saskatchewan River is pretty impressive, and it links two fairly interesting parts of the city, starting with the Legislature and downtown on the north side. On the south is Strathcona, where U of A is, and pretty close to Whyte Ave - the whole area there has lots of good restaurants and places to eat, and shopping if that's your thing.

Definitely echo Mike's point re: food. Two of our best friends in Hamilton are former Edmontonians, and they made sure my wife and I ate really well whenever we went out in Edmonton.
